A’s Acquire Fernando Nieve from the Indians
The A’s acquired Fernando Nieve today from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for cash. Nieve has played the entire season with the Columbus Clippers, the Indians’ International League affiliate. There he has pitched in 22 games, with two of them being starts, and 44 2/3 innings with 11.1 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 for a 1.81 ERA and more pedestrian 3.00 FIP. Nieve has not pitched at the Major League level since 2010 when he appeared in 40 games for the New York Mets splitting his time between there and Triple-A Buffalo. Since then he has played at Round Rock in the Astros organization and Albuquerque in the Dodgers organization.
His career totals from 2006 through 2010 with the Astros and Mets are 99 appearances and 19 starts for a grand total of 185 2/3 innings of 6.9 K/9, 4.1 BB/9 and 1.7 HR/9 baseball for a 4.61 ERA and awful 5.40 FIP adding to a total of -1.0 WAR. Nieve represents organizational depth and at 31 years old, will likely be there in case the A’s suffer some sort of bullpen catastrophe heading into the home stretch. Nice little pickup that costs nothing, so can’t really complain, given that it is August little will come of it.
