Jesse Chavez Recalled; Scribner Optioned

April 20, 2013

The A’s have optioned Evan Scribner to Sacramento and recalled Jesse Chavez. Scribner has thrown 12 2/3 innings and has not looked great during them in 2013 owning a 4.26 ERA and 4.03 FIP. While not terrible (my suspicion is this has more to do with the fact that yesterday Scribner filling in for the injured Brett Anderson threw 65 pitches and the entire bullpen corps is in need of rest right now) the A’s want to go in a different direction and are recalling a pitcher they have a lot of hope for in the guy who I was confused as to how he kept managing to cling to his 40-man roster spot in Chavez. As the great A’s Farm reported in their interview of Grady Fuson,

“Chavez has tremendous stuff. It’s just about him harnessing it, and he’s dominated in Triple-A. So it’s just about him getting used to playing in front of a second deck and the lights not blinding him a little bit. But we feel good about having him down there (at Sacramento).”

In his time in Sacramento thus far this year Chavez has posted a 2.45 ERA with 9.3 K/9, 2.0 BB/9 and 0.5 HR/9 for a 2.65 FIP. Not too shabby. This success has yet to translate to MLB baseball so hopefully that changes now. While Chavez has started for the River Cats he will be used as a reliever in Oakland.
