Cespedes to 15-Day DL; Taylor to Oakland
Yoenis Cespedes has landed himself on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left hand. Cespedes seemingly injured it during an awkward slide in Friday night’s ballgame. This is his second strained left hand muscle injury, the last one last May caused him to missed the last three-quarters of that month. Cespedes off to a slow start was hitting .200/.298/.450 with a .315 wOBA and 99 wRC+ in his 47 trips to the plate in 2013.
To take his spot on the roster is none other than Michael Taylor. Taylor, whom I have long since stopped expecting anything out of, is hitting .410/.452/.769 with a .521 wOBA and 209 wRC+ in his 42 River Cats plate appearances this April. There are some who hope he can break through and force a decision for the A’s much like Chris Carter did last year but I wouldn’t anticipate such. Chris Young figures to the beneficiary in terms of playing time taking over for Cespedes. I would’ve rather seen Shane Peterson get this call up over Taylor. In two short MLB stints Taylor has hit a combined .176/.250/.255 with a home run, .233 wOBA and 43 wRC+ in 56 plate appearances for -0.5 WAR.
