Update from PHX: March 25/Recap: Brewers @ A’s Game 28

March 25, 2013
  • A’s skipped by the Brew Crew 9-7 at Phoenix Municipal Stadium today.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle expects that Nate Freiman will get a look at first this year highlighting that last season the A’s gave both Brandon Allen and Kila Ka’aihue extended looks. If Freiman makes the club it seems that Daric Barton would not and he is out of options and kind of pricey for a guy you might not want to have hang around.
  • Freiman’s ability to stay on the roster could be dependent upon another roster decision for the A’s, the fate of Hiroyuki Nakajima. Nakajima could be destined for Sacramento. A’s officials apparently are not thrilled with the lack of progression and want him to get into a groove prior to exposing him to MLB pitching. If Nakajima took up a roster spot it would relegate Jed Lowrie to that super-utility role and Scott Sizemore is looking more and more definite to get the nod at second base in light of his better hitting (if not for the fact I think it never was in doubt to begin with).
  • A’s lineup against Milwaukee: Coco Crisp CF, Adam Rosales SS, Josh Reddick RF, Chris Young LF, Derek Norris DH, Josh Donaldson 3B, Freiman 1B, John Jaso C, Sizemore 2B. Freiman’s first defensive chance resulted in an E3, otherwise he went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk. Young had a grand slam off of Chris Narveson, and Sizemore had a 4-for-4 day to raise his spring line to .244/.379/.311 in 58 trips to the plate, could be a turning point for him. On the rubber, Bartolo Colon got the start, Dan Straily not looking so sharp (could he possibly lose the temporary fifth starter job? His spring is now an ugly: 7.56 ERA in 16 2/3 innings with seven BB’s to 15 K’s with an ugly 1.92 WHIP) pitched three innings of relief followed up by Pedro Figueroa.
