Pedro Figueroa Lone A’s Player in World Baseball Classic

January 17, 2013

Southpaw Pedro Figueroa will be the only Oakland A’s player suiting up in the World Baseball Classic. Figueroa was selected to represent his home, the Dominican Republic. He will be the only lefty in the bullpen of the Dominican squad, the only other left-handed pitcher on the team is starter Wandy Rodriguez.

This speaks to the lack of quality pitchers on the Dominican team, as Figueroa split 2012 between Oakland and Sacramento, posting a 3.32 ERA with 5.8 K/9, 6.2 BB/9 and 0.8 HR/9 in 21 2/3 innings for a 5.08 FIP with the big league squad, with a much stronger 2.62 ERA backed by 8.1 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 0.2 HR/9 for a 3.11 FIP in the Pacific Coast League. I am a bit surprised no other A’s made the team. I suppose Yoenis Cespedes has been deemed ineligible by Cuba, I’d have expected Hiroyuki Nakajima to play with Japan, and then there are plenty of options for the Australian team on the A’s roster and it wouldn’t have been surprising to see a player like Josh Reddick on the American squad.
