A’s Avoid Arbitration with Jaso and Smith
The A’s avoided arbitration with John Jaso and Seth Smith leaving just two arbitration eligible A’s unsigned (Jerry Blevins and Brandon Moss). The A’s wasted no time in inking Jaso who they acquired yesterday in a three-way trade with Seattle and Washington. I documented Jaso’s contributions already but he figures to be the A’s primary catcher and hit .276/.394/.456 in 2012 with the M’s, posting a .372 wOBA and 143 wRC+ in 361 plate appearances for 2.7 WAR. The A’s inked him for $1.8M for the 2013 campaign when last year he was worth $12.2M up in Seattle. Great value on Jaso and pretty much in line with what was expected.
Smith meanwhile signed for $3.675M on the heels of his first season in Oakland where he hit .240/.333/.420 in 441 plate appearances worth 1.4 WAR while posting a .325 wOBA and 107 wRC+. Smith platooned with Jonny Gomes for a good part of the season and fell slightly short of career averages in most categories. Smith still is a good and important piece of the club and represents good value at $3.675M.
