A’s Acquire Chris Resop from Pittsburgh

November 30, 2012

The A’s acquired arbitration eligible right-handed pitcher Chris Resop from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed MiLB pitcher Zach Thornton. Resop who just turned 30, has spent the past two seasons in Pittsburgh and last year turned in a 0.1 WAR season in 61 appearances and 73 2/3 innings for the Bucs. He sported a 3.91 ERA, in line with his 3.96 FIP with 5.6 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 0.7 HR/9 with a great 50.4% groundball rate.

The pitcher Oakland sent to back to the Pirates was Thornton who they drafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Oregon. This past season Thornton was in Stockton where he pitched in 48 games finishing 43 of them acquiring 16 saves. He pitched 52 2/3 innings with sparkling peripherals: 11.7 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 and 0.8 HR/9 good for a 3.09 FIP to offset his somewhat high 4.53 ERA (aided by a high BABIP of .356 and low strand rate of 64.4%).

To make room for the new acquisition who was placed on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated for assignment recently acquired Sandy Rosario whom the A’s acquired on Wednesday from the Boston Red Sox. Rosario spent the majority of the year playing MiLB ball, though he pitched three innings with Miami, where he posted a combined 1.99 ERA with 7.4 K/9, 0.6 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 across just 31 2/3 innings, the lion’s share coming with Triple-A New Orleans, and in relief (he had two starts out of 25 appearances).

It isn’t clear if Rosario will clear waivers has he has been claimed before. Resop meanwhile looks to be a good right-handed veteran addition. As of right now it is not clear if the A’s have tendered him a contract but one has to suspect they have. He is projected to earn $1.3M as per which is about in line with his value in both 2010 ($1.0M), 2011 ($1.2M) though this past season he was just worth a mere $400K.
