Tyson Ross Recalled from Sacramento

September 3, 2012

It is Labor Day in America and Oakland A’s fans in response will be subjected to laborious innings pitched as they have recalled Tyson Ross from Sacramento to fill in in their bullpen. Now in that 20-2 game versus the Red Sox I suppose I’d take little issue with putting Ross in for an inning or two of work, but in virtually any other situation this year my confidence is shot on him and I think I look elsewhere.

Ross comes back to Oakland having pitched 68 1/3 innings all as a starter across 13 stars. During these 68 1/3 innings he has managed 5.4 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and 0.9 HR/9 for a 6.45 ERA and 4.86 FIP. He has been hit hard with hitters teeing up at a .322/.401/.465 slash line off him. While the .355 BABIP is high and should come down, he has just been leaving hitable pitches over the plate and MLB hitters hit those. Minor league hitters are different it’d seem as in Sacramento this year, Ross has baffled PCL hitters to a 2.99 ERA and 3.46 FIP in 78 1/3 innings with the River Cats with 7.4 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and 0.5 HR/9 with a more normal .283 BABIP.

It’ll be interesting to see if Ross gets much playing time but if he does it signifies things are either going very well or horribly wrong for the A’s. This move brings Oakland’s active roster to an even 30.
