Godfrey Outrighted to Sacramento

August 29, 2012

This did not come even remotely as a surprise to me but Graham Godfrey cleared waivers today and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. Godfrey is 28, a not particularly enticing “prospect” and would seem ill-fitted to be on many a team’s 40-man roster, today that was proven true by the 29 other teams and the A’s. Godfrey has thrown 46 MLB innings with Oakland across the last two seasons, pitching to a 5.09 ERA to go with 4.5 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 (despite pitching at the very home run forgiving Coliseum) for a 5.27 FIP.

Despite making the A’s rotation out of spring training, I would expect that the words “organizational filler” will follow Godfrey for the majority of the remainder of his professional baseball career. He already is buried on the A’s depth chart and with him off the 40-man roster it seems even a decent pitching performance (akin to what Bruce Billings has done for most of the year) will not ever get him the look he desires back with the big league club. I have no specific problems with Godfrey, he just is not as talented as the many arms in front of him in Oakland’s pecking order.

There is somewhere in Greece where people go to ask deep questions… “Dude” Is that “like” totally” Oracle Arena adjacent to the Oakland Coliseum?

Question 1: When is the Last minute someone can be on the roster for postseason eligibility? is it on the 40 man roster?

Question 2: What happens when a player is on the DL can they be on the DL but also take up one of the above postseason roster spots to be eligible later? Or is it 40 + DL ?

Thank You …Ooh honorable Euclis: The Greek God of Walks for your mystic guidance

      1. The person has to be on either a) the 25 man active roster, b) the disabled list, c) the bereavement/paternity list or finally (d) the suspended list as of August 31 the end of the day.

      2. There is an exception to the above, which is that a player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from the team’s August 31st 40-man roster who plays the same position (think a position player for position player or a pitcher for pitcher).

      You’re welcome 😀
