A’s Acquire Jesse Chavez

August 24, 2012

The A’s traded cash considerations to the Toronto Blue Jays to acquire right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez. Chavez has appeared in nine games for Toronto but also made two starts, going 21 1/3 innings of 11.4 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and 2.5 HR/9 baseball for a 8.44 ERA and still sloppy 5.91 FIP. The HR/FB has been out of whack for Chavez this year at 25.0% so the xFIP at 3.91 may be a better indicator of how he has done this year. Regardless in his career Chavez has been far from impressive, the just recently turned 29 year old native of the Inland Empire owns a 5.74 ERA, and 5.17 FIP for his career with 7.4 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 1.7 HR/9 as he has always struggled with surrendering the long ball.

The A’s probably are getting him for organizational depth, it appears he is Sacramento bound, and this year he has gained familiarity with the Pacific Coast League spending a good chunk of time with the Las Vegas 51s where he has pitched 95 innings across 19 appearances, 17 of them starts, posting a very solid 8.2 K/9, 1.9 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 for a 4.07 ERA and 3.42 FIP. Can’t complain about the move as it looks like the A’s gave up nothing to get him and given Bartolo Colon found himself placed on the 50-day suspension list, the A’s had an open 40-man roster spot that they were able to fill.

In an unrelated move the A’s also optioned Tyson Ross back to Sacramento as I had anticipated, following his poor start against Tampa Bay. Ross now on the year is the owner of a 6.45 ERA and 4.85 FIP backed by 5.4 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and 0.9 HR/9 and will be jettisoned back to Sacramento. Jim Miller meanwhile returns to take his place. Miller has been a fortunately for him effective member of the bullpen this year with a questionable 2.16 ERA, as it is backed by some shady peripherals (8.1 K/9, 4.9 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9) that lead to a 4.66 FIP. Also of concern is his sky high 94.1% strand rate along with a relatively low .250 BABIP. Regardless, I imagine that he won’t be around particularly long as I imagine A.J. Griffin or Dan Straily will take his roster spot soon enough when the A’s need to replug the Colon hole in the rotation.
