Inge to DL; Donaldson Back

August 14, 2012

The dislocated shoulder than did not preclude Brandon Inge from hitting in the game winning run versus the White Sox, will preclude him from continuing on with the A’s for the time being. Inge, who since being signed after he was DFA’d has been the A’s starting third baseman getting 309 plate appearances and hitting to a .224/.285/.384 clip and being worth 1.8 WAR largely on the back of his outstanding play in the field. Inge who has also provided some pop with 12 home runs, despite a weak .288 wOBA and 81 wRC+ was placed on the DL retroactive to August 12th.

In his stead returns Josh Donaldson. Donaldson has chewed up and spit out Pacific Coast League pitching this year, with a .428 wOBA and 155 wRC+ as he has hit to a .335/.402/.598 slash line with 13 home runs in just 234 plate appearances with the River Cats. He is walking at a solid 9.8% clip and striking out just 14.5% of the time. This is of course in very stark contrast to his performance (or lack thereof) with the A’s this year where has been worth a team worst -0.4 WAR putting together a .153/.160/.235 slash line in 100 plate appearances with a home run and meager .172 wOBA and 1 wRC+.

If Donaldson can continue to perform at a clip closer resembling his Triple-A numbers versus his paltry MLB stats, can’t say I mind having him up getting some playing time as unlike Inge he could end up being a part of longer term plans with the A’s. For the interim, let’s just hope he doesn’t look as lost at the plate as he has in his previous two stints with the big club and can string together some good at bats.
