McCarthy Activated; Sogard Placed on 15-Day

August 10, 2012

As expected Brandon McCarthy was activated to make tonight’s start against the White Sox. In two starts at Triple-A Sacramento he threw nine and two-thirds innings of 5.59 ERA, 3.20 FIP baseball as he struck out eleven, walked three and allowed a home run in two starts against Memphis and in Reno. On the year McCarthy, who was placed on the DL June 24th, has put up 1.6 WAR (which was good for first on the team when placed on the disabled list) in 78 innings of 2.54 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 6.0 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9 baseball. To make room for McCarthy the A’s placed a lower light on the disabled list, infielder Eric Sogard.

Sogard, who is suffering from a strained back and was placed on the DL retroactive to August 7th, has had a miserable year hitting just .167/.206/.275 for a .215 wOBA and anemic 31 wRC+ across 108 plate appearances. Why Sogard is even with the big league club is beyond me so I can’t say I have a strong opinion one way or the other regarding his hitting the disabled list or being demoted. The A’s really need some infield help and it’ll be interesting to see if they make any moves to shore that up given how tight the wild card race is, and given how the A’s are actually – shockingly some may say – in contention. Frankly with the guys they have I don’t see how they stay in contention, they are that weak in the infield. That said, the A’s have been winning on the backs of their pitchers and the return of McCarthy and probable near return of Brett Anderson mean that the A’s are in a good position to keep this up despite their obvious deficiencies.
