Pennington Activated; Figueroa Sent Back Down

August 7, 2012

Pedro Figueroa has been going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth again this year. He is again, forth or back? I am not sure which. Figueroa was sent down to Sacramento yet again after appearing in two games, one against Toronto and one against Los Angeles throwing a combined three innings of one hit, two walk, three strikeout shutout baseball bringing his season totals to a 1.20 ERA but with a worrisome 5.08 FIP care of a messy 4.8 K/9, 6.6 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9 profile and unsustainable .184 BABIP and 96.6% strand rate. Why is Figueroa being sent back down after two solid outings? Cliff Pennington is being activated off of the disabled list.

I found that a bit surprising to say the least because just yesterday Jane Lee of reported,

“Though health appears to be back on his side, A’s shortstop Cliff Pennington will have to watch his club engage in three pivotal games with the Angels from afar with Triple-A Sacramento.

It’s there where Pennington will continue a rehab stint this week, despite going a combined 3-for-7 with two walks and a stolen base in two starts at shortstop for the River Cats over the weekend.

‘He’ll probably play there the next three days, and then we’ll see where we’re at with him,” manager Bob Melvin said Monday.”

So regardless, the short-handed bench will have Pennington available now. Adam Rosales gets the start today at shortstop but we’ll see if and when Penny gets in, I imagine it will only be in case of emergency. For what it is worth on the year he is hitting .197/.259/.282 with three home runs in 314 plate appearances. He has had a weak 7.3% BB%, .245 wOBA and 51 wRC+ as he has been frankly one of the worst regulars in Major League Baseball if not the worst. In his brief time rehabbing with Sacramento, he had 14 plate appearances putting up a .455/.571/.545 slash line, .522 wOBA and 216 wRC+ across three games. Obviously the A’s are hoping he brings that success with him to Oakland.
