A’s Reportedly Interested in Chase Headley

July 23, 2012

The Oakland A’s, struggling with offensive production from the left side, reportedly are interested in San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley. Headley has had 413 plate appearances so far this season, with a .268/.361/.425 slash line. He has hit 11 home runs despite playing in the spacious Petco Park, and also has a strong 12.3% BB%. A strong defender, he has been worth 3.6 WAR already thus far this season and looks to be in good position to top his previous high of 4.9 WAR in 2010.

The A’s meanwhile have had several players go in and out of third base though the position has been Brandon Inge‘s since his acquisition. On the year, A’s third basemen have been a pretty offensively joyless lot with a .184/.230/.333 slash line in 374 plate appearances so Headley would represent a monumental improvement. Headley is arbitration eligible for a third time next year and a fourth time in 2014 so the two years of team control would benefit a club like Oakland. They also would be getting one of baseball’s best third basemen and one just entering his prime at 28 years old. Of course, that all said, he would not come cheap. One has to wonder then what it would take to get him. Frankly it seems like it’d be worth it if the A’s went out and traded a big piece like Sonny Gray or Michael Choice even to get him and I’d fully support such a move.
