A’s Release(d) Luke Hughes
The A’s released Luke Hughes way back on the 17th but that went unnoticed by me, and well frankly a lot of other people. Hughes’ career in Oakland was short-lived, claimed off of waivers by the Twins who DFA’d him, he spent all of four games with the green and gold before Oakland too opted to designate him for assignment. During his tenure he went 1-for-13 (.077), with no walks, and six strikeouts. So despite just four games he was worth -0.4 WAR, quite a quick pace to tally negative worth.
He unsurprisingly clear waivers and the Australian was sent to Sacramento (and a brief stint in Midland as well). In 35 games with Sacramento he had 121 plate appearances, hitting .235/.331/.353 with a .305 wOBA and 74 wRC+. I had the opportunity to see him play in Las Vegas, and the A’s so loaded with middle infielders at that level at that time were playing him in right field, though it turns out that was his only game in right field with the River Cats. Here is wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors, the A’s however despite their struggles at shortstop and the left side of the infield did not seem as though they would be aided at all by having Hughes in the mix.
