Chris Carter Up to Oakland; Tyson Ross Down to Sacramento

June 29, 2012

First baseman Chris Carter was recalled by the A’s today. Carter, who really should be a designated hitter and likely will make the three errors in an inning and two errors one play Brandon Moss look like a Gold Glover, was hitting .279/.369/.485 with the River Cats in 320 plate appearances featuring twelve home runs. He had a strong 11.9% BB%, a Triple-A low for him 22.5% K% and a .375 wOBA and 121 wRC+. Carter will be the first baseman in tonight’s game in Texas and hitting seventh. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a look the A’s give him. I have long felt he deserves a long look, he has had a mere 124 plate appearances to his name in his MLB career, doing very little with them: -1.3 WAR, .167/.226/.254 slash line, .221 wOBA and 33 wRC+. I seem to think the A’s will give him a longer look, as they their promotion of Derek Norris (who is designated hitting in this game tonight), shows that they seem to be committed to giving these young call-ups real playing time.

Sent down to make room is Tyson Ross. Ross, who should be receiving less playing time until he proves he can actually play, last pitched in the opener of the Texas series. As per usual, he pitched poorly leaving his season mark at a much deserved even if meaningless, 2-8 record with 0.0 WAR across 62 1/3 innings of 5.1 K/9, 4.3 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 baseball for an FIP of 5.08 that is slightly better than his atrocious 6.35 ERA. He will head down to Sacramento which means a new starter likely will be due to be recalled to Oakland. Brad Peacock seems a strong candidate though it could also be Bruce Billings who has had a strong year in Sacramento (70 innings, 7.8 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, 0.5 HR/9 for a 3.34 ERA and 3.06 FIP).
