Live Blogging: A’s @ Rockies Game 64

June 14, 2012

The A’s and Rockies take each other on today at Coors Field in Denver for an afternoon matchup. Jarrod Parker is pitching for Oakland bringing a 3.19 ERA and 3.77 FIP across 53 2/3 innings with 6.5 K/9 and a high 4.9 BB/9 with 0.3 HR/9. The Rockies counter with a youngster of their own in Alex White who is having a rough year, with a 5.66 ERA and 5.09 FIP in 41 1/3 innings with 5.7 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 and 1.5 HR/9. As a side note regarding White, pitchers with single digits on their uniforms are so strange looking. White wears the numbers six. A’s outfield is Seth Smith, Coco Crisp (leading off – not a fan) and Josh Reddick. Adam Rosales gets the start at second base. Neither CSNCalifornia or RootSports are covering this one, so its the MLB feed with Rockies radio for me. I don’t understand why the A’s television crew travels all the way to Denver then is left idle for a day game like this. Not my decision…

  • 12:06PM PDT – Top of 1st, 3 out – Mean strikeout there by White against Smith. Inning over. No first inning theatrics today perhaps?
  • 12:13PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 2 out – Great toss from Kurt Suzuki to cut down Dexter Fowler trying to steal second. Big out with Carlos Gonzalez at the plate. Fowler had been 6-for-6 prior to that caught stealing.
  • 12:20PM PDT – Top of 2nd, 1 out – Brandon Moss hits a double into the corner. Moss has had a heck of a series here in Colorado and keeps up his hot hitting. A’s need to score early and get Parker some support.
  • 12:22PM PDT – Top of 2nd, 1 out – Suzuki hits it to center but right at Fowler so Moss only can get to third and not score. Moss isn’t that fast (a -3.9 career baserunner as per FanGraphs along with being 2-for-9 stealing bases) so couldn’t have scored no matter what and a sound decision not to take the unnecessary risk.
  • 12:28PM PDT – Top of 2nd, 1 out  – Bad throw from Jordan Pacheco gets past Tyler Colvin at first and two runs score and Rosie gets to second. A’s get a 2-0 lead.
  • 12:37PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 3 out – Parker K’s Pacheco meaning he has set down three of the last four hitters he’s faced on strikes.
  • 12:41PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 0 out – Big E for effort for Gonazlez who lays all out but can’t get the sinking Reddick hit and he ends up on second with the hot-hitting Smith due up. Really a bad series for CarGo in virtually every respect.
  • 12:49PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 1 out – Man, Moss likes playing at Coors Field. Triples to right field halfway up the wall. Two runs score. A’s lead 4-0. Michael Cuddyer in right field dropped the ball and bobbled it so I assume this will be a double and an error instead of a triple.
  • 12:51PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 2 out – Rosie is intentionally walked so that White can deal with Parker. I get the move, but it still is kind of funny the idea of anyone avoiding Rosales. I’d take the chances with Rosie and hope for an automatic out to start the fourth.
  • 1:56PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 1 out – Chris Nelson hits it back up the middle. Parker is upset with himself for not fielding it. Tough play. I like that he cares about his defense like this. In the game against the Rangers where he had a no-no he had the same reaction when Michael Young hit one back up the middle feeling he should’ve had it himself. Nice to see a pitcher not just leaving it up to chance but wanting to be a true fielder.
  • 1:59PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 2 out – Impressive bunt from White to move Nelson to second. Parker did what you always should do but doesn’t seem to often be done, which is throw it hard and up and in. SurprisEd White could get it down like he did.
  • 1:08PM PDT – Top of 4th, 0 out – Pitchers are up in the Rockies bullpen as a leadoff hit to Coco and then a walk to Cliff Pennington has the A’s all set to go here in the fourth with the heart of the order due up.
  • 1:12PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – Wilin Rosario is having a tough time of it with a passed ball getting Coco and Penny to second and third and now the Rox will put on Smith. Rosario isn’t doing great back there but White isn’t exactly helping matters.
  • 1:24PM PDT – Top of 5th, 0 out – A familiar face takes the mound for the Colorado Rockies, as Guillermo Moscoso comes out of the pen for Jim Tracy‘s purple pinstriped club. Moscoso is not exactly having the most fitting follow up to last year, or perhaps he is given that I felt he way outperformed his peripherals. This year he owns a 9.56 ERA in 16 innings offset by a 5.56 FIP. He has 10.1 K/9, 4.5 BB/9 and a problematic 2.3 HR/9. Gone is the amazing .221 BABIP of 2011, as it is replaced by a .449 mark this year long with a shocking 18.2% HR/FB%. The pendulum has most certainly swung for Mr. Moscoso.
  • 1:37PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 3 out – Parker is looking good five innings just two hits, no walks, five K’s. When he is on he really is on.
  • 1:43PM PDT – Top of 6th, 0 out – Nice bunt single for Pennington. He had Pacheco racing in and there was just no play that could be made. Perfect bunt.
  • 1:54PM PDT – Top of 6th, 2 out – Long at bat but Moscoso loses Smith and the bases are loaded. A’s have had a lot of baserunners but just four runs to show for them all.
  • 2:01PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 1 out – First walk surrendered by Parker as Fowler draws a walk. Closest thing to a rally thus far for Colorado as they now have men on second (Nelson) and first (Fowler).
  • 2:11PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Suzuki gets on base on a weird hit. Ball bounces off of Suzuki’s bat basically and Suzuki has to run. Rosario comes out tosses it low to Colvin who can’t dig it out. Throwing error on Rosario, who really rushed the throw unnecessarily, but Colvin really not looking good at all at first base. When the ball hits the ground Colvin is lost.
  • 2:27PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Matt Reynolds is out to pitch for the Rockies. Moscoso had a good three innings allowing just two hits with two walks while K’ing two but most importantly not allowing any runs to cross the plate. He had a performance reminiscent of his time in Oakland, .222 BABIP, 0.00 ERA yet a 3.72 FIP.
  • 2:30PM PDT – Top of 8th, 2 out – Hanging curveball. Reddick makes Reynolds pay. Facing of the second deck in right field. Home run number fifteen on the year. Reynolds knew it off the bat. A’s add on, it’s 5-0.
  • 2:37PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Grant Balfour comes in to get the A’s through the eighth (and perhaps beyond, his last time out he went two innings). Balfour has steadily improved this year and enters this one with a 3.13 ERA and 3.88 FIP with solid peripherals: 7.4 K/9, 3.7 BB/9 and 0.9 HR/9 in 31 2/3 innings.
  • 2:46PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – New Rockies pitcher is Josh Roenicke and on the third pitch to Moss… home run. He has a home run in each of the games of this series. Fourth of the series all together as it ends up in Oakland’s bullpen. The home run makes it 6-0 and gives the A’s another insurance runs.
  • 2:53PM PDT – Top of 9th, 1 out – Base hit up the middle for Coco – third on the day – and it scores Suzuki. The Rockies announcers for the second time this inning call the A’s, the Angels as that A team from California ups the lead to 7-0.
  • 2:58PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Wild pitch moved everyone over one, and instead of a 4-6-3 double play, Pennington grounds out to Nelson and Rosales scores from third to make it 8-0 Oakland.
  • 3:02PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 0 out – Mop-up work goes to former Colorado Rockie (or would it be Rocky?) Brian Fuentes. Fuentes has a 5.24 ERA following his latest meltdown in Arizona to go with his 4.18 FIP based on 6.5 K/9, 2.0 BB/9 and 1.2 HR/9 in 22 1/3 innings.
  • 3:05PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 1 out – Marco Scutaro takes Fuentes deep to left field. The shutout for the A’s is gone as the Rockies cut the lead down to a 8-1 with two outs remaining in the ballgame.
  • 3:07PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 1 out – CarGo, a non-factor for most of this series gets a hit off of Fuentes, literally off of him as it is hit straight up the middle.
  • 3:10PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 2 out – Colvin doubles into the left field corner. Gonzalez scores. A’s 8, Rox 2. Fuentes looks like garbage this afternoon.
  • 3:15PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 3 out – Fuentes K’s Rosario. Ballgame. A’s sweep. Nice series.
