Live Blogging: A’s @ Rockies Game 63

June 13, 2012

Brandon McCarthy was sidelined from today’s start and one has to wonder if these never ending injury concerns will ever cease. In a way this could be a good thing for the A’s. Always ones to seek out damaged goods, or at least people the market views as damaged, different, etc, the A’s could get a very good pitcher for 150 or so innings a year at a discount because of a lack of durability. I wonder if this in a way is a good thing for the A’s chances of retaining him? Regardless in his stead Tommy Milone starts for the A’s. Milone has not looked sharp at all away from the Coliseum and Coors Field is not the place to go. On the road thus far he has a 6.35 ERA, compared to a tiny 0.98 in Oakland. He squares off against a former Oakland Athletic: Josh Outman. Outman has an amazingly high 8.18 ERA but a very low 1.96 FIP in his 11 innings with the Rockies. I still fail to understand what Bob Melvin is thinking when he creates lineups. Yesterday Brandon Moss hit two of the longest home runs of the year for the A’s, and today he is hitting seventh behind Josh Donaldson catching (.160/.158/.245). Also Cliff Pennington nearly hits two out (successfully hitting one) and he too hits behind Donaldson (eighth). Yoenis Cespedes is back in the lineup hitting fourth with Collin Cowgill hitting second and in center.

  • 5:45PM PDT – Top of 1st, 1 out – Home run Seth Smith! Wow. He is hot right now. Looking good right now. Cowgill on board with a single scores and the A’s jump out to a 2-0 lead.
  • 5:54PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 0 out – Dexter Fowler walks, now Marco Scutaro with a single to right and its the corners. Not a good start for Milone but last night Bartolo Colon had an awful start before things settled down and let’s hope that’s what all that happens before Milone settles in.
  • 6:01PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 1 out – Hanging curve ball and Todd Helton makes Milone pay. Grand slam to right center. Rox up 4-2.
  • 6:06PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 2 out – The intentional walk to Chris Nelson backfires as Outman singles opposite field between the third baseman and shortstop and a run scores making it 5-2 Rockies.
  • 6:18PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – Jonny Gomes is taking over in left field for Cespedes. Bad sign. Seems like he twinged something running out that grounder in the first. I wonder if he is injury prone or if this is a bout of bad luck. Never know with these international players and the limited info we have on them, particularly those from Cuba.
  • 6:22PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 2 out – Michael Cuddyer takes Milone deep to right center field. Eighth on the season for him. Rockies now are up 6-2.
  • 6:46PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – Brandon Inge singles home Gomes from second (he got there with a double). A’s cut the lead to 6-3.
  • 6:48PM PDT – Top of 4th, 2 out – I do not want to start believing in someone who has time and time again in his career disappointed, but have a series Brandon Moss. Home run! A’s still down but narrow it to 6-5.
  • 6:58PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 2 out – Cuddyer goes deep again to right field. Rockies get two back 8-5. Milone is just atrocious on the road. Like not even passably good. It is such a stark contrast, sort of like how the offensive numbers manifest themselves for Rockies regulars. Wow.
  • 7:12PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 0 out – Jim Miller now comes into the game and good riddance because Milone was awful. Four innings, eight earned runs, on seven hits including three home runs, to go with four walks and four strikeouts. Miller comes into this one with 7.9 K/9, 2.7 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9 for a 3.88 FIP. But he has a great 1.59 ERA benefiting from an amazing 98.8% strand rate.
  • 7:17PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Wilin Rosario steals second. Donaldson air mails it so Rosario ends up on third.
  • 7:25PM PDT – Top of 6th, 0 out – Adam Ottavino is into the game for the Rockies to relieve the largely ineffective Outman and the first pitch he throws – a 94 mph flat fastball down the middle – is deposited into the left field stands at Coors Field by Gomes. A’s still trail but cut it to 8-6.
  • 7:40PM PDT – Top of 7th, 0 out – Rex Brothers now comes out. Yesterday he struck out three batters but also gave up a long home run to Inge. Hard throwing lefty.
  • 7:47PM PDT – Top of 7th, 0 out – Pennington gets on board via a Scutaro error, now Coco Crisp draws a walk from Brothers. Go ahead run is now at the plate in the form of one Jemile Weeks.
  • 7:52PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Brothers is being ditched by Jim Tracy in favor of Matt Belisle. Despite being a reliever, Belisle leads the Rockies pitchers in WAR at 1.0. He has 6.8 K/9, 0.9 BB/9 and 0.3 HR/9 for a strong 2.33 FIP to go along with his strong 2.56 ERA across 31 2/3 innings, especially in light of the fact half his games are played here in Denver.
  • 7:54PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Base hit for Cowgill! Pennington scores. A’s cut the lead to one.
  • 8:02 PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 0 out – A’s can score. Jerry Blevins is now in for Melvin to try and keep the Rockies lead stalled. Blevins has been used in these keeping deficits minimal situations quite a bit this year. He owns a 2.39 ERA, with a 3.97 FIP backed by 8.2 K/9, 3.8 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 in his 26 1/3 innings on the hill.
  • 8:27PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Rafael Betancourt comes out to pitch. 2.05 ERA, 3.01 FIP, 8.6 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9 for him in 22 innings. He is looking to hold the lead for Colorado with 10 shutdowns to just two meltdowns on the year. DJ LeMahieu is in at second (he pinch-hit for Belisle in the bottom half of the eighth), and Nelson moves over to third.
  • 8:29PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Bloop single for Crisp and the tying run is on base.
  • 8:33PM PDT – Top of 9th, 1 out – Big, big play there. Crisp steals third. Betancourt is slower than molasses and he read it well and the tying run is right there. Great play. That is where Coco is actually very useful, he is an excellent baserunner. Not so useful when you seldom get on.
  • 8:37PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Cowgill hits it out to shallow right. Cuddyer comes up throwing. Crisp tags. He is SAFE! A’s tie it at eight! Nice slide from Coco to avoid the Rosario tag.
  • 8:40PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Smith nearly hit it out. But it is a double off the center field wall.
  • 8:42PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Josh Reddick is in to pinch hit for Blevins and is being intentionally walked. Shows the respect they have for Reddick.
  • 8:44pM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Double from Inge! A’s take the lead 10-8 as the ball bounces around in the corner on Tyler Colvin in left field. Great job from Reddick scoring from first. Love when the intentional walk bites the giver in the butt.
  • 8:49PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 0 out – He got it done yesterday and Ryan Cook is out for save number two tonight.
  • 8:52PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 2 out – Big double play by the A’s, and now Jason Giambi is the last hope for Colorado.
  • 8:54PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 3 out – Game over. What a great game! Go A’s!
