Ka’aihue DFA’d, Carignan DL’d and Moss and Scribner Up

June 6, 2012

Two surprising moves today, one more surprising than the other. Kila Ka’aihue, the A’s starting first baseman for the past week was designated for assignment today. Ka’aihue frankly wasn’t ever very good but given the A’s inability to find or develop first base talent he was made the starter once Daric Barton was sent to Sacramento for additional seasoning. In 139 plate appearances with the A’s Ka’aihue had a .234/.295/.398 slash line with four home runs a .305 wOBA and a 94 wRC+. He has also walked 7.2% of the time while going down on strikes 20.1% of the time, though contrary to his appearance of a big slow moving fielder was passable and a net positive  in the field. What is even more surprising is the person one would expect to be called up – Chris Carter – wasn’t, instead it is Brandon Moss who is up, having been added to the 40-man roster in his place. Moss who likely has little to no future with the A’s instead is being given a shot. In Sacramento he has had 224 plate appearances, with a .286/.371/.582 slash line. Impressive is that those numbers come with a .289 BABIP in Sacramento, and his .411 wOBA and 146 wRC+ show just how much better he has been than his Pacific Coast colleagues. Also in his 224 plate appearances he has an impressive 15 home runs. Of course, Triple-A success is nothing new for Moss, who in a staggering 487 games and 2,027 plate appearances at the level has launched 84 home runs. I think there is a good chance that Ka’aihue clears waivers and finds himself in Sacramento, but then the question sort of has to be what the heck will Oakland even do with him there with Barton and Carter there and presumably eating up playing time. But if this is not a sign to A’s fans about how much Carter’s stock has fallen with the front office I have no idea what could possibly be more indicative.

The other move is Andrew Carignan being placed on the more often used 15-day disabled list. Carignan has been up and down with Oakland a slew of times already and has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament which is never good for a pitcher. In nine and two-thirds innings spanning 11 games he has a 4.66 ERA and 4.48 FIP with 7.5 K/9 and 9.3 BB/9 without a home run allowed yet. Replacing him will be Evan Scribner who was added to the 40-man roster. Scribner, acquired by the A’s off of waivers from the Padres, performed admirably in spring training and some thought he might even snag a spot in the bullpen. The righty has appeared in 23 games for Sacramento throwing 32 2/3 innings of 3.31 ERA, 3.48 FIP baseball with 9.6 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 and 1.1 HR/9. He has been aided by a .244 BABIP and high 75.8% strand rate.

If somebody is DFAed and clears waivers then goes to the 40 man roster, does he get an additional option to use that year?

Somebody on this blog may be able to explain this as a way to move a current DH to 1B to clear a DH space for Manny soon…

That’s a “Maui Wowie” .!! (not the primary usage of this phrase ; ) )
Just as surprising as the fact that
Brandon Allen was DFA’ed the same day.

Well at least this season is weirdly interesting…Go A’s

If someone is DFA’d and clears waivers they are off of the 40-man roster. And if he is readded to the 40-man later, to option him again you’d need to DFA him again.

Kool and Congrats to her! If I remember correctly OSU has maybe the largest enrollment what an accomplishment !!!

On the lighter side: Don’t let her trade any Big Ten championship rings for tattoos!

I went to Michigan State, we are the class of the Big Ten. #VictoryForMSU 😉

But yes, it is a big deal. OSU is a big school so it is quite an accomplishment. It also is a good school – even if ethically challenged in athletics – so it isn’t any sort of joke.
