Live Blogging: A’s @ Royals Game 54

June 3, 2012

Tommy Milone takes on the Royals. He hasn’t been sharp on the road but hopes to remedy that against the Royals. Former Athletic Vin  Mazzaro takes the hill for Kansas City. Mazzaro has pitched well in his two outings that add up to six innings pitched with a 2.86 FIP to go along with his 4.50 ERA. In 47 innings at Omaha he had 7.5 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9 with a 4.40 ERA and 3.48 FIP. Lineup is a bit different than what we’ve seen lately, Collin Cowgill leads off; Seth Smith hits seventh and DH’s; Josh Donaldson has his debut at catcher; and finally Adam Rosales hits ninth and plays second as Jemile Weeks is out with a hip strain that caused him to exit yesterday’s game prematurely.
  • 11:13PM PDT – Top of 1st, 0 out – Leadoff hit for Cowgill to start the ballgame. I think he could be a good leadoff hitter, he seems to have good at bats and get on base which is a good asset on this team.
  • 11:22PM PDT – Top of 1st, 2 out – Kila Ka’aihue draws a walk, bases will be juiced for Brandon Inge
  • 11:24PM PDT – Top of 1st, 3 out – …and Inge blows it.
  • 11:49PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 0 out – Eric Hosmer launched that one over Cowgill’s head in center field. Royals get an early 1-0 lead. Hosmer is one of my favorite players to watch on other teams.
  • 11:53PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 3 out – Nice recovery for Milone. Three K’s in a row for Milone as he gets Brayan Pena, Alcides Escobar and Jarrod Dyson down on strikes.
  • 12:03PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 2 out – Nice to see Josh Reddick get that steal there. I love this guy. He plays like there is no tomorrow. He is great.
  • 12:08PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 1 out – Nice catch there by Reddick against the way. He is undoubtedly the All Star representative on this team. He should be on the team even without the “every team needs a guy” rule. Alex Gordon, who got on with a leadoff double, moves over to third.
  • 12:10PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 2 out – Big strikeout getting Billy Butler down on strikes. It’s hard to imagine that if Butler hit the ball practically anywhere the pretty fleet of foot Gordon wouldn’t have been able to score.
  • 12:37PM PDT – Top of 5th, 3 out – Wow. What a play by Gordon to just get to that ball. Like seeing Rosales racing home and shoving the catcher out of the way but Pena hangs on, even though he balanced on his neck awkwardly it almost seemed for a while. Big double play as the Royals and Mazzaro hold their lead. I think the decision to run for Rosales was fair. Gordon threw it on the run, you don’t see outfielders do that – of course, Gordon is a former infielder – and made an incredible play to get him. Rosales’ calculus (and probably Mike Gallego‘s) didn’t involve that happening. Have to try and tie it up there. Can’t fault that at all.
  • 12:46PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Dyson’s speed and stolen base gets the Royals a run. Milone leaves the change up over the plate and Johnny Giavotella hits a single to left center to score him. Royals up the lead to 2-0.
  • 12:55PM PDT – Top of 6th, 3 out – Three up, three down for Mazzaro who is looking a lot better than most A’s fans (and Royals fans) can recall seeing him. 97 pitches, only 58 for strikes but in six innings he’s allowed just four hits, while walking and striking out three.
  • 1:04PM PDT – Top of 7th, 0 out – Kelvin Herrera is into the game in relief of Mazzaro who is the victim of a high pitch count. Herrera has looked good in 2012: 28 innings pitched (all these Royals relievers have thrown so many innings) with 8.0 K/9, 1.3 BB/9 and 1.3 HR/9 allowed. The ERA stands at 3.21, the FIP at a tidy 3.53.
  • 1:16PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 2 out – Nice play by Pennington there to leap and steal a base hit from Dyson. Dyson is definitely someone you don’t want to see on base.
  • 1:20PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Greg Holland is in for Kansas City. Just 14 innings for him on the year, 5.79 ERA but a strong 2.67 FIP – I really like this Kansas City bullpen, all around a lot of talent. 12.2 K/9,  but he needs to work on the control with 7.1 BB/9 though he has yet to allow an HR.
  • 1:25PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Base hit for Reddick. A’s need to take advantage of the error by Yuniesky Betancourt that allowed Pennington to get on.
  • 1:31PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Andrew Carignan is in. Why Bob Melvin insists on continually going to him is beyond me. But to me a 2-0 lead is one you have a good shot at protecting. Throwing out someone like Carignan doesn’t protect a lead as much as threatens its expansion.
  • 1:32PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Two hits to lead off the inning. See above comment.
  • 1:40PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Jonathan Broxton in for Ned Yost‘s Royals to get the save. He has a 1.74 ERA , and a 3.61 FIP in 20 2/3 innings. K/9 rate is down from where it used to be for him at 6.1 K/9 just over half his career mark of 11.3 K/9.
  • 1:41PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Inge with a leadoff single to start the ninth. The tying run now trots to the plate in Smith. Remember back in April the A’s got a win off of Broxton.
  • 1:44PM PDT – Top of 9th, 1 out – Don’t know who is worse really Coco Crisp or Donaldson, but Crisp is up to pinch-hit.
  • 1:48PM PDT – Top of 9th, 3 out – Weeks comes in to pinch hit for Rosales, not sure I liked that idea because if the A’s did indeed tie it then you risk injuring a formerly injury prone Weeks. But the groundout to Broxton ends the game. The A’s get shut out again and lose 2-0.
