Live Blogging: A’s @ Giants Game 42

May 21, 2012

Bartolo Colon faces off against Tim Lincecum today at AT&T Park as the A’s look to end their eleven game skid in San Francisco. Lincecum has struggled this year with a 5.77 ERA but his strong peripherals (9.9 K/9, 4.5 BB/9 and 0.4 HR/9) leave his FIP (2.95) a smidgen above his career mark (2.93). The A’s throw Colon out there, who has been merely OK with the A’s but has the interesting distinction of very similar ERA, FIP and xFIPs at 4.13, 4.13 and 4.14 respectively. A’s lineup isn’t that different from what we have seen as of late, with of course the big news for the A’s being that Brandon McCarthy is being placed on the disabled list with a shoulder strain.

  • 1:12PM PDT – Top of 1st, 3 out – Seth Smith strikes out swinging, making it three swinging strikeouts in the inning for Lincecum to go along with the one walk he allowed.
  • 1:15PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 1 out – Gregor Blanco struck out on three pitches by Colon. This game could be a quick one if these pitchers keep up like this.
  • 1:30PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 1 out –
  • 1:32PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 1 out – Joaquin Arias drives it deep to center field. Angel Pagan, on board with a double and moved over to third on a fly out, tags from third and scores easily on the sacrifice. Giants take a 1-0 lead.
  • 1:34PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 1 out – Nice bunt from Emmanuel Burriss there to make it to first on the bunt single. Surprised Colon was even able to move over there fast enough to make the play close. Don’t think much of Colon as a closer.
  • 1:41PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 2 out – Jemile Weeks triples in a very bizarre play with the ball bouncing off the wall funny. With his speed you have to wonder if he’d be at third regardless. He is looking a lot better as of late. Good to see.
  • 1:53PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 1 out – Melky Cabrera with a single to move Brandon Crawford over to third.
  • 1:55PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 2 out – Another sacrifice fly leads to another Giants run. Buster Posey drives it to right, Josh Reddick comes up throwing but the ball gets to Kurt Suzuki a hair too late and Crawford scores. Giants 2, Athletics 0.
  • 2:06PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – A’s have a bit of a rally going as Smith and Josh Donaldson with back-to-back singles.
  • 2:09PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – 3-2 pitch from Lincecum is low, Daric Barton checks his swing and the bases are loaded for the A’s and Suzuki.
  • 2:11PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – Arias snags the Suzuki hit behind the bag at third – nice play but he is so far out in no man’s land he has nowhere to go everyone is safe and the run (Smith) scores. A’s cut the Giants lead in half 2-1. Really need to credit Arias on a nice play there, had he not made it that ball was likely destined to the corner, so it mitigates the damage for Lincecum.
  • 2:13PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – Huge hit by Collin Cowgill with Colon on deck! Right back up the middle into center field on a liner. Two runs score. A’s take the lead 3-2.
  • 2:15PM PDT – Top of 4th, 2 out – Colon lays down an actually pretty nice bunt. But a good play by Brandon Belt gets Suzuki at third. Strange that Suzuki was so far away and that play wasn’t even remotely close. Colon meanwhile limps down the first base line but appears alright.
  • 2:17PM PDT – Top of 4th, 2 out – Wow. That is one of the best plays I have seen in a while. Posey loses the baseball on a wild pitch and he can’t find it. Cowgill doesn’t hesitate, runs from second, Posey finds it throws to Lincecum, Cowgill slams into him at the plate and the ball comes loose and the run scores. A’s up 4-2!
  • 2:31PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 2 out – I wonder if Lincecum is hurt? His pitch count is high for how few innings he has pitched being at 90 (51 for strikes) but he is being pulled as Nate Schierholtz steps up to take his place in the batter’s box.
  • 2:34PM PDT – Top of 5th, 0 out – New Giants pitcher will be Shane Loux. Loux is making his second appearance as a San Francisco Giant, entering today with one-inning pitched on May 11th against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix. So he has been used sparingly at the MLB level but in Fresno this year he has thrown 21 innings of 5.1 K/9, 1.3 BB/9 baseball yet to give up a homer giving him a tidy 0.43 ERA and 2.63 FIP.
  • 2:44PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Fifth K of the game for Colon as he gets Blanco again, this time on a pretty high strike. As a fan of the high strike – even if it comes against the A’s – I approve.
  • 2:46PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Back-to-back hits for Crawford and Cabrera, who is now 3-for-3 on the day. He is having a good season up to .349/.392/.494 with a .384 wOBA and 146 wRC+, don’t think many expected that when he came to San Francisco from Kansas City.
  • 2:47PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 1 out – Bases loaded as Colon hits Posey…
  • 2:55PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 3 out – Big two K’s for Colon to get both Pagan and Belt on strikeouts to end the threat without a run scoring.
  • 3:05PM PDT – Top of 6th, 3 out – Loux six up, six down perfect two innings. Can’t imagine he goes much further than that in this contest.
  • 3:07PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 0 out – Jordan Norberto comes in for what I expect just one inning as the pitcher is due up to start the seventh but a double switch was not made. Colon’s day is through after five innings of two earned run, six hit, two walk, seven strikeout baseball as he throws 92 pitches with 58 for strikes.
  • 3:11PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 2 out – Loux is hitting and this is his first ever MLB plate appearance.
  • 3:15PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Eric Sogard comes out to pinch hit for Norberto and flies out to center. Grant Balfour is throwing and looks to be the man for the seventh inning.
  • 3:19PM PDT – Top of 7th, 2 out – Insurance runs! Reddick belts it to straight-away center field to give the A’s a two run shot and a 6-2 lead. Reddick’s eleventh home run on the season scores Cliff Pennington.
  • 3:23PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 0 out – New pitcher is Balfour. The additional runs might change things up a bit in how Bob Melvin uses his pen going forward but for now Balfour is in. He has appeared in 21 games throwing 20 innings of 7.2 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 baseball with a 4.50 ERA and 4.52 FIP.
  • 3:31PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 2 out – 4-for-4 for Cabrera. I got to see Cabrera play way back in the day when he was with the Battle Creek Yankees of the Midwest League. He isn’t as bad a ballplayer as he’s been made out to be and the more I watch him the more I like what I see. Meanwhile in the A’s bullpen Ryan Cook is throwing which leads me to the believe the insurance run is not altering Melvin’s usage plans.
  • 3:35PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Steve Edlefsen comes in to the game for the Giants. A’s really got to him in Friday’s game.
  • 3:36PM PDT – Top of 8th, 0 out – Weird bounce there with the foul ball bouncing off the ground and then getting Donaldson right below the eye. Seems like he is OK, what a freaky bounce.
  • 3:47PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Cook comes in, 8.2 K/9, 4.6 BB/9 no home runs. 0.00 ERA as he has yet to allow a run in now 19 2/3 innings of work to start the season. His 2.66 FIP is pretty good too. Astoundingly hitters have just a .091 BABIP and are hitting .065 off of him this season.
  • 3:51PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 2 out – Back-to-back strikeouts looking. Man his stuff is electric. Pagan and Belt just frozen.
  • 3:55PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Kila Ka’aihue is out to pinch hit for Cook. Brian Fuentes is throwing in the bullpen so looks like Melvin just wants to get everyone some work in.
  • 4:02PM PDT – Top of 9th, 1 out – Pennington with a single that moves Weeks on with a walk over to third. With the A’s looking at padding their lead, and likely given their success against Edlefsen the other night. Bruce Bochy is going back to his bullpen and getting out Javier Lopez. Lopez has a 1.04 ERA and 2.51 FIP backed by 8.3 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and no home runs. So many guys on the Giants bullpen staff have yet to give up a homer. Lopez, a situational lefty has thrown just eight and two-thirds innings despite playing in 17 games.
  • 4:06PM PDT – Top of 9th, 3 out – Lopez does what he is paid to do with six pitches to set down Reddick and Smith. Yikes. It is now Fuentes time to close this out – yikes, again though Fuentes is having a decent enough year and has five shutdowns to two meltdowns a quarter of the way through.
  • 4:17PM PDT – Bottom of 9th, 3 out – Streak over. A’s win. Fuentes K’s Crawford ballgame over. A’s back to .500.
