McCarthy Scratched with Shoulder Soreness

May 8, 2012

Brandon McCarthy will not make his scheduled start and has been pushed to next make a start Saturday if all goes well and he recuperates from the soreness. The soreness has to be a concern for the A’s as he has dealt time and time again with shoulder issues that some say are related to the “inverted W” present in his motion and that others chalk up just to bad luck. Hopefully this soreness is short lived and not a precursor to anything more sinister. The A’s will start Jarrod Parker tonight versus Toronto, followed by Tyson Ross, Bartolo Colon and Tommy Milone before the scheduled start for McCarthy on Saturday.

The A’s depth at starting pitcher is not terrible, Graham Godfrey who pitched with the A’s earlier in the year has posted a 0.45 ERA and 2.20 FIP in 20 innings of work with Sacramento along with 7.2 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 having yet to surrender a home run. Should the A’s decide service time is not a consideration they also have top prospect Brad Peacock in Sacramento who currently owns a 3.24 ERA and 3.41 FIP in 33 1/3 innings of 8.6 K/9, 3.5 BB/9 and 0.5 HR/9 work.
