A’s Claim Hughes, Move Braden to 60-Day

April 22, 2012

The A’s claimed Minnesota Twins infielder Luke Hughes off of waivers today – the second waiver claim of an Australian for the week. The Twins, hoped to get the out-of-options Hughes through waivers when they designated him for assignment on April 18th after 11 plate appearances this season during which he posted a .200/.182/.200 slash line with a .184 wOBA and 10 wRC+. Of course, he ought not be judged on just eleven plate appearances and over the course of his career’s 335 plate appearances (not really an amount to be judged on either mind you) he has hit a still largely unimpressive .224/.285/.342 being worth 0.6 WAR across his 102 games.

Hughes has played a grand total of 121 MLB innings at third base, though he played a plurality (278) of his 593 MiLB games at the hot corner which is exactly why I think this move is being made. To get him on the 40-man roster the A’s transferred Dallas Braden off of the 15-day and onto the 60-day disabled list which is significant as this means the timetable for his return clearly has dramatically changed. I wonder if this spells the end of the Josh Donaldson experiment at third base for the A’s. Donaldson has been a -0.5 WAR player this season limping to a .094/.094/.094 slash line worth .091 wOBA and -50 wRC+ in 32 plate appearances. He already has lost significant playing time to Eric Sogard.

    hmmm..
Wondering if the Giants have any territorial claim from the SF Penninsula out into the Pacific.
    The Sydney A’s?

P.S. Also…now THAT would really piss off the new Al West Astros travel planner!

I’m sure their territorial rights if they had their way extend even further than that!

I guess we are looking at late summer for both Braden and Anderson to return? Donaldson has looked lost at the plate–perhaps a trip to SAC to get his confidence back is in order. Also, as long as they are making moves, why not DL Coco and bring up a red-hot Michael Taylor? The A’s have been a man short for almost a week now. The past few years the A’s seem content to nurse injuries and play shorthanded, instead of using the DL.

Agreed with the weird use of the DL in years past. Interestingly it seemed they gave a hot Jemile Weeks a shot by DL’ing a poor hitting Ellis who just tweaked something. That landed us a decent result. I worry with Braden this could be a full year thing. Then let’s say he comes back late. Do you offer him arbitration or non-tender him? We may have seen the last of Dallas which sort of sucks because I really like him.
