Live Blogging: A’s @ Mariners Game 9

April 14, 2012

The A’s take on the Mariners and they get to see some new pitchers on both sides as Hector Noesi will take the hill for the Mariners and for the A’s they put up Tommy Milone. Milone in his first outing of the year against the Royals threw eight shutout innings, but interesting;y just threw three swinging strikes. The question is can his weak contact keep up? Obviously he needs to get some strikeouts, his swinging strikes alone only would have combined for one, but can he get away with what looks like very few strikeouts. A’s lineup is identical to last night’s.

  • 6:15PM PDT – Top of 1st, 3 out – Two strikeouts for Noesi and he gets both Coco Crisp and Josh Reddick down on strikes.
  • 6:18PM PDT – Bottom of 1st, 1 out – Milone got that out of the way, getting Chone Figgins swinging for strike three and his first strikeout of the year. Maybe this can quiet some critics after an admittedly statistically strange but effective outing last time up.
  • 6:31PM PDT – Bottom of 2nd, 1 out – Jesus Montero, who is playing catcher today so maybe the M’s aren’t completely giving up on him being a catcher though I would, with a home run to straight center field. Nice swing there, and turns around on an 88 mph fastball from Milone – you can’t leave those there Tommy. M’s up 1-0.
  • 6:38PM PDT – Top of 3rd, o out – Nice leadoff hit for Daric Barton. I think he has looked pretty good so far both in the field and hitting. I think he is going to have a good year. Brandon Allen who?
  • 6:40PM PDT – Top of 3rd, 2 out – Love that Josh Donaldson was running there. Need to test Montero and prove that he can get guys. The throw was terrible, but Donaldson probably had it stolen regardless.
  • 6:45PM PDT – Bottom of 3rd, 1 out – Milone gets Casper Wells swinging. I am a big believer in Milone and it is nice to have him get some K’s early since I think it was really an aberration last start with the non-existent swinging strikes.
  • 6:53PM PDT – Top of 4th, 1 out – Reddick gets a base hit under the glove of Dustin Ackley. Would love to see him running and give Montero fits and keep Noesi off his game concerned about a runner.
  • 6:57PM PDT – Top of 4th, 3 out – 5-4-3 double play. Yoenis Cespedes ends the A’s threat right there. Wish Reddick had gone. Keep running until Montero proves he can stop you is how I see it.
  • 7:01 PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 1 out – Change-up gets Ackley. Three K’s for Milone.
  • 7:03PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 2 out – Barton dives, recovers to throw to Milone and get Ichiro Suzuki. Amazing close play. Didn’t buy it until I saw the replay. Impressive. Thought it was a good play regardless even had Ichiro been safe.
  • 7:07PM PDT – Bottom of 4th, 3 out – Another strike out. Make it four as Milone gets Justin Smoak. Goes from 0.0 K/9 to 9.0 K/9 overnight!
  • 7:12PM PDT – Top of 5th, 3 out – Noesi is off to a good start. 53 pitches through five innings, 36 for strikes. No walks, two K’s just two base hits for the A’s. Another 1-0 game here between these two light hitting clubs. Ultimately this overshadows and incredible performance from Milone as it is just one hit for them, a mistake pitch from Milone to Montero who leads off the bottom half.
  • 7:18PM PDT – Bottom of 5th, 3 out – Milone K’s Miguel Olivo. So again through five just the one mistake and a big one since his teammates aren’t picking him up.
  • 7:24PM PDT – Top of 6th, 1 out – Base hit for Cliff Pennington in short center field. Pennington is someone who can and should test Montero.
  • 7:32PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 1 out – Brendan Ryan hits one up the middle. Just the M’s second hit off of Milone tonight. On the previous play, Donaldson made a nice pick and throw to get Wells. I hope Donaldson’s continued success defensively, one would not know how little experience he has at third given his play there, can translate into offensive side success. Really want to see him stick.
  • 7:36PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 1 out – Figgins gets a single to left center. Coco throws to third on the very aggressive Ryan rightfully testing his arm (unlike what Bob Melvin is doing letting runners languish on first on Montero’s arm) and doesn’t get him. Figgins moves to second on the play, so quite a jam Milone now has to work himself out of.
  • 7:39PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 1 out – With the count full, Milone walks Ackley. I don’t know that this is necessarily the worst thing. Ichiro is tough to double up, but this does make a force at any base.
  • 7:41PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 2 out – Can’t ask for much more than that. Milone jams Ichiro and it ends up a weak pop out to Pennington. Up to Smoak now for the M’s.
  • 7:45PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 2 out – Milone walks Smoak with the count 3-2. Not sure it missed, but if it did it did not miss by much of anything at all. M’s add on one more and it is 2-0.
  • 7:47PM PDT – Bottom of 6th, 3 out – Damage done. Montero rips one down the right field line. Two runs score. Smoak tries to race around and score but the Reddick to Barton to Kurt Suzuki relay nabs him at the plate. Not sure that pitch to Smoak missed and that is a big call as while the A’s get out of the inning, the M’s now lead it a seemingly insurmountable 4-0.
  • 7:53PM PDT – Top of 7th, 1 out – Nice to see Cespedes no longer being super fooled by the breaking stuff. He is improving before our eyes in that regard as he draws the walk from Noesi. Now let’s test Montero! Cespedes has the speed.
  • 8:01PM PDT – Bottom of 7th, 0 out – So we finally get to see Fautino De Los Santos. Just his second appearance in nine games. Don’t get where he has gone to and why he is now a mop up guy.
  • 8:17PM PDT – Top of 8th, 2 out – A base hit. Finally. Pennington gets a hit up the middle to get on board. Doubt he’ll be running and testing Montero as Melvin has shown such an inexplicable aversion to it all night.
  • 8:19PM PDT – Top of 8th, 2 out – A ground rule double from Weeks, who is really hitting the ball deep these days. Bounces off the Safeco Field warning track and into the shrubbery of the Pacific Northwest beyond it. That holds Pennington at third, and also holds Weeks at second. It seemed likely Weeks would’ve ended up with a triple and Pennington was absolutely without doubt going to score, so score one for the warning track M’s fans.
  • 8:20PM PDT – Top of 8th, 3 out – Terrible, terrible at bat from Coco. One swing. Pop up in the infield. Awful.
  • 8:22PM PDT – Bottom of 8th, 0 out – Jerry Blevins comes out to pitch for the A’s and his fourth appearance of the year. So far the bad results (5.40 ERA) are better than the way he has pitched (10.41 FIP), those are the perils of allowing 5.4 HR/9.
  • 8:26PM PDT – Bottom of 8th 1 out – Hard hit ball by Figgins, now a double off the wall in right by Ackley. Blevins is being hit hard, I just never have been crazy high on him.
  • 8:33PM PDT – Top of 9th, 0 out – Brandon League has three shutdowns and no meltdowns on the young season. Not a save situation but he is in to wrap things up for the M’s.
  • 8:39PM PDT – Top of 9th, 2 out – Seth Smith seems to always have good at bats. He has another drawing a walk after running it full.
  • 8:40PM PDT – Top of 9th, 3 out – Game over.

Nice recap of the game–thanks. In your recap yesterday you brought up De Los Santos–when he came into the game tonight Fosse said he lost his job as set up guy to Cook during spring training because the A’s felt his stuff was not the same. Hmmm . . . Tough luck for Milone in the sixth–close call on Smoak and then Montero’s ball is just fair.

Yeah, I’ve heard that is why he lost the gig. I guess I just don’t get it. Spring training is such a small sample size, this is a guy frequently bandied about as closer of the future, yet now you are going to barely use him and in a mop-up type role at that? I like Cook a lot, I’ve been really impressed by him. But I don’t see why De Los Santos isn’t perhaps the 7th inning guy?

Like that you are open to the steal and small ball a bit..I can understand no bunting for the sacrifice and the stats to prove that.(remember Weeks 3 games ago). But situationally, let’s kill walk and sit Beane Ball. You are dead on about using our available speed and testing unprovens. Look otherwise why did we build a team of these guys right? Coco’s arm is a disgrace. People exploit it…we should do the same to others’
