Is Casey Blake a Fit for Oakland?

March 27, 2012

The Colorado Rockies released third baseman Casey Blake today. Blake had signed a non-guaranteed contract worth $2M with additional performance bonuses attached this past December. Blake was worth 1.1 WAR last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 63 games, hitting four home runs in his 239 plate appearances. He had a .252/.342/.371 slash line and a .314 wOBA and 99 wRC+. He is a decent defensive third baseman.

The A’s still don’t have a settled situation at third base with Josh Donaldson and Eric Sogard being the leading candidates – presently it looks like they may platoon over there. Blake wouldn’t be the worst option and probably would cost less than the $2M that the Rockies paid him and would be a relative steal that the A’s could ship off at the deadline. If Billy Beane opted to get Blake it wouldn’t be the worst option on earth and would give the A’s a bit of latitude at a very weak position. I still feel Sogard is best used as a reserve infielder and that Adam Rosales‘ utility isn’t really there anymore.

If at all possible, Signing Casey Blake would be a wise decision.

I’m not convinced The A’s won’t contend this year, You gotta believe every year. Donaldson can’t hit MLB pitching, Sogard is undersized & inexperienced at 3rd base.

As you know I want to give Donaldson a go as he could be a valuable versatile guy longer term. But, Blake wouldn’t be terrible. Can’t see how the A’s contend though unless there is a mega collapse by both the Rangers and Angels. I think the Rangers are susceptible to a collapse, some suspect pitching, lots of injury prone key players, but the Angels and Rangers tanking together seems unlikely and frankly there isn’t that much daylight between the A’s and M’s so you need everyone else to have rough years which seems unlikely.

You know, at this point I’m okay with Donaldson getting some starts at 3rd. Daric Barton isn’t a bad idea too. Whoever can hit above .250 and play decent defense I’m fine with (at this point)

Billy Beane did a good job this off season for what he has. The A’s are a huge underdog, But with Bob Melvin’s attitude and coaching. You can’t counted us out. Anything can happen. Most experts picked the A’s to win the West last year…. Keep positive every year.
