Pridie of the A’s?

March 9, 2012

UPDATE: Turns out the drugs are not performance-enhancing but rather “drugs of abuse”. While it perhaps changes my sentiments regarding how he got his stats last year, it doesn’t change the analysis for what this means for the A’s. However, it should be said, whether he has a problem with addiction or is just making poor choices, or whatever, let’s hope he gets himself back on track.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports via Twitter,

“OF Jason Pridie suspended 50 games, violating minor-league drug program. Agent Matt Sosnick not returning calls.”

The Athletics of course have one person who is out for 50 games due to a drug violation, why not add a second? At this point we do not know what he has tested positive for. With what happened to Ryan Braun it is possible, though it seems unlikely, that he could appeal and win this thing. But it doesn’t seem like last year at least he got much of a boost from any performance-enhancing drugs as he hit .239/.309/.370 with the Mets along with a .304 wOBA and 92 wRC+ in 236 plate appearances. Pridie had a .139 ISO and four home runs and only 6.6% of his fly balls left the fences though he did play half his games in spacious Citi Field, he certainly doesn’t seem a prime suspect for PED use. If the drugs we being used recently, his spring line of 1-for-7 with a strikeout and two walks, the lone hit being a double, do not make any wonder about something being awry either.

With Pridie so low on the outfield depth chart that he looked to be perhaps just a backup at Sacramento this upcoming season, if he is indeed suspended this should not have any significant roster or baseball implications for the Oakland A’s baseball club or the organizational depth as a whole.

If it’s not PEDs, I couldn’t care less. My guess is – like Jeremy Giambi – he probably likes to light one up on occasion. How long are you out there for? I’ll be getting out there on Tuesday. Just noticed we’re neighbors on MLB Trade Rumors’ blog list today!

I wonder if that is a violation of MLB rules? I have to assume it is. Poor guys who plays in the California League. Ha!

I am in Arizona just for the day. I live in Riverside so it is a relatively – ok, for me it is a drive worth it to see a ballgame, for most it isn’t – short drive. Last weekend I spent the night but tomorrow it’ll be an in and out trip.

Yes, loved your piece. Would love to talk to you offline about your strategy with interviews and such. Hope you enjoyed mine. Will be posting part two of my interviews (four more guys) on Sunday!
