Recap: A’s @ Cubs ST Game 5

March 5, 2012

The other half of the Athletics were in Mesa at HoHoKam Park to face the Chicago Cubs. This game with presumably the fairly well-stocked “B” team ended with the A’s winning it 8-7.

  • The A’s top hitters this spring all participated in this game. Prospect Yordy Cabrera leads the team in batting average at 1.000 (1-for-1) his lone hit being the game winning home run he hit off of the Cubs’ Anthony Zych to win this. So presently he has a 4.000 SLG and 5.000 OPS. You’ll read it here first, he is likely not going to sustain those levels. Next best A’s hitter Josh Reddick (.625/.625/.875) played and went 2-for-3 with a triple, as did next best after him Brandon Allen (.500/.500/1.125) who went 0-for-1 with a walk.
  • Bartolo Colon got roughed up in his Cactus League debut with 2 2/3 innings of work that saw him allow three earned runs on four hits, walking nobody and K’ing one. The runs all came on the home run Colon allowed to Blake DeWitt which make the outing look worse than it could have been.
  • Jordan Norberto relieved Colon and in his one inning of work looked more like the Norberto of old – not really a good thing – walking two while K’ing one. He also allowed three hits and three runs (two of them earned). Norberto’s BB/9 (and yes, we know, smallest of small sample sizes) is back up to 9.0.
  • Joey Devine, Erick Threets, Travis Banwart all pitched an inning a piece, with all allowing one hit and walking none – Devine adding a strikeout to his line. Non-roster invite Fabio Castro pitched two innings of relief blowing the A’s lead in a three hit, one walk, one strikeout but most importantly one earned run appearance. That later turned into a win with Cabrera’s home run.
  • Josh Horton played the entire game at second going 1-for-4. Horton, a second round draft pick in 2007 perhaps has a very outside chance at the third base a job. He has 16 appearances at the position across 438 games. In his brief Triple-A debut last year he had 103 plate appearances where he failed to impress with a .267 wOBA and 42 wRC+ while posting a .217/.282/.283 slash line. So few A’s have actually played any given game start to finish this spring so that is the lone reason it is noteworthy. He might spell Eric Sogard who participated in this game – his fourth game of the spring so far along with a team high fourteen at bats.

No worries. David, Dan, “hey you”. All will work! I have yet to try today but I know all day yesterday I couldn’t get online save for with my iPhone. I know someone else had mo issues with their Kindle too but I wasn’t able to get a browser to work. Writing this from my phone I’m not yet sure if it is working but for whatever reason kept telling me it was just me.
