No Analysis Can Make Sense of This…

November 16, 2011

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times tweeted this today:

“Source: A’s met today with Ponson’s agent.”

Ponson being, Sidney Ponson. Career 5.03 ERA, 4.67 FIP Sidney Ponson who has not pitched since 2009 when he posted a 7.36 ERA with a mere 4.9 K/9 and a poor 3.8 BB/9 with Kansas City. The 6’1, 260 lbs (assuming that number hasn’t changed since he last squeezed into a uniform) Ponson, certainly doesn’t look like a ballplayer. He hasn’t really been much of a ballplayer either. His last sub-5.00 ERA season came way back in 2003 when he split the season between Baltimore and San Francisco posting a 3.75 mark, which also marks his only season with a sub 4.00 ERA. Perhaps the only truly momentous occasion in Ponson’s long run-in-with-the-law-ridden career, is when in the 2009 World Baseball Classic he helped the Netherlands (Ponson is a native of the Dutch island of Aruba) upset the Dominican Republic earning the victory. The only reason I can see him being of utility to the A’s is if their plane crashed any survivors could likely feed off him for several days if not weeks, otherwise I’d pass on this signing.
