A’s Sign Edgar Gonzalez to MiLB Deal

November 3, 2011

The A’s today signed RHP Edgar Gonzalez to a minor-league deal. The soon-to-be 29-year-old Gonzalez is a previous member of the Athletics as he spent the 2009 season in the Green and Gold appearing in 26 games (including six starts) totaling 65 1/3 innings pitched, of 5.4 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 0.6 HR/9. His ERA that year was 5.51 with a less sloppy 4.26 FIP as he accounted for 0.5 WAR – his highest single season total of his eight year career. His 0.5 WAR in 2009 accounted for the majority of his 0.6 total WAR over the course of his career.

Gonzalez last spent time with the Colorado Rockies, appearing in one game in 2011. For his career, Gonzalez has appeared in 107 games (most with the Arizona Diamondbacks), with 41 starts, over which he has put up 5.8 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 and 1.6 HR/9 adding up to a 5.90 ERA and a 5.35 FIP. It seems possible that Gonzalez will fill a comparable role to what Guillermo Moscoso filled this season as a very extra depth starter possible swingman should injury strike regulars yet again.
