Shea It Ain’t So: A Baffling Oakland A’s Target

October 24, 2011

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle had an article yesterday discussing the various free-agents who could be headed for new destinations. There were three A’s related parts of it, talking about two of the A’s free-agents in Coco Crisp (whom Shea pegged as headed across the bay to the Giants, or potentially taking his talents to South Beach to ply his trade for the new Miami Marlins) and Josh Willingham (whom Shea predicts is bound for the South Side of Chicago – really? – or potentially Cincinnati – really?) and then also discussing one guy who could be headed for the Coliseum: Derrek Lee.

Derrek Lee? Yeah, Derrek Lee.

The A’s are alleged to be interested in re-signing Hideki Matsui, they also have Brandon Allen, Daric Barton, Chris Carter and Kila Ka’aihue in the mix at first base/designated hitter, why not add an aging above-average for most of his career player to the mix is apparently Shea’s line of thinking. Lee who split last season between the Orioles and Pirates, was worth 1.4 WAR posting a .267/.325/.446 slash line with a strong .335 wOBA and 112 wRC+. He featured a career low 6.9% BB% (his career mark is 11.0%) with a high for him strikeout rate of 23.1% (his highest since 1999 when he played with Florida) while mixing in 19 home runs. While Lee seemingly has the potential to be an upgrade over any of the current options, the 36-year-old Lee is far from a sure thing as he ages.

Now admittedly Shea lists the A’s as a “long shot” as opposed to where he is likely going to end up (which is equally inexplicable as the Angels who have Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo manning first seem to have a logjam of their own at the position) but the idea that the A’s who are in desperate need of an outfielder or third baseman would actively seek out a player like Lee comes completely out of left field (a position we do need serious help in). I am not sure if this is an actual rumor or just a figment of Shea’s imagination but either way it makes little to no sense. If Billy Beane and the A’s front office is thinking about Derrek Lee they need to adjust their thinking. No thanks!

Updating a previous attempt at this:

    C: Daric Barton
    1B: Derrek Lee
    2B: Jemile Weeks
    SS: Cliff Pennington
    3B: Kila Kai’ahue
    LF: Hideki Matsui
    CF: Ryan Sweeney
    RF: Brandon Allen
    DH: Chris Carter

    We could do that.

Hey, can’t be much less productive than this year’s edition right?
