Sonny Gray to Sign and Go to Midland

July 25, 2011

UPDATE 4:50PM PDT: It is official. Sonny Gray has signed and as reported by Jim Callis of Baseball America it is with a $1.54M bonus which is slightly above the slot recommendation by MLB. Welcome to Oakland Sonny!

Keith Law of ESPN.com reports that Athletics’ first round draft pick pitcher Sonny Gray out of Vanderbilt University is close to signing with the A’s and is in Oakland for a physical. He tweets,

“Confirmed that first-rounder @SonnyGray2 is in Oakland today for a physical. Announcement could come later today.”

Furthermore he adds that Gray will begin his professional career with the Midland Rockhounds of the Texas League, in a separate tweet, tweeting,

“Also: once Gray is stretched out enough, Oakland plans to send him to AA Midland.”

This is great news as a tweet from last week caused some concern amongst A’s partisans when Gray himself tweeted about his living situation in Nashville for what would have been his upcoming senior year when he wrote,

“Me and @coreyw24 got our apartment at vandy for next year and let me tell ya. It is sweet.. #notbad #penthouse.”

Some speculated the tweet was a negotiating ploy as @coreyw24 is Corey Williams, a third round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins who also has yet to sign.

It would be great if the A’s could quickly sign Gray and get him a month’s worth of work at Double-A Midland. Given that he has three years experience pitching at Vanderbilt, Gray could conceivably quickly rise through the A’s farm system and be in Oakland sooner rather than later.
