Reds Are Interested in Coco Crisp

July 19, 2011

The Cincinnati Reds apparently are interested in Coco Crisp. The Reds who have a deep farm system are presumably interested in Crisp for their leadoff position and to be their left fielder. Crisp hasn’t been leadoff material this year with a low OBP (.312) and his career mark (.330) isn’t much better. That said, he has stolen 27 bases and represents a great deal of speed on the bases. He has been a -0.7 fielder for the A’s this year in center but the Reds plans to play him in left might help boost his fielding though it seems to early in his career still for Crisp to be experiencing some sort of permanent decline.

Interestingly enough according to the article from Danny Knobler of the other player the Reds are eyeing is Chone Figgins of the Mariners who is both overpriced and underachieving – a dangerous combination – it is expected the Mariners would pick up much of his remaining price tag to rid themselves of him. It is unclear what the Reds would give up to get Crisp or how much – if at all – the two teams have talked or if they have even exchanged names. Crisp, who is a free agent following the end of the year is earning $5.75M. Following tonight’s loss the NL Central preseason favorite Reds (47-50) find themselves in fourth place, five games behind the surprise Central leading Pittsburgh Pirates who incidentally have scouts in Detroit tonight to see Conor Jackson and Josh Willingham (who is sitting tonight’s match out to their chagrin).
