Chris Carter Era Part Two Begins…

June 23, 2011

Chris Carter has been recalled from Sacramento and will join the Athletics – not sure if he will in time for this afternoon’s game. Carter who had been primarily playing first base for the River Cats will be taking Josh Willingham‘s roster spot as he was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 18th.

The ramifications of this move in the short term at least seem to indicate that Mark Ellis will in fact not see time at first base, however it will be interesting to see what is done with the lineup. I am guessing we will see Conor Jackson playing more left field (when not in interleague play) and Carter will start at first which means the big loser out of this deal could be David DeJesus who clearly has fallen under Ryan Sweeney on the outfield depth chart.

Willingham’s achilles injury effects the A’s in one other way, in that if they do in fact become sellers (and despite our recent success we are still well under .500 and still in last place lest we forget) Willingham’s already minimal trade value has taken a direct hit. We will see how all this plays out in the days to come – but now the A’s might just have a legitimate power bat in their lineup again?
