Kouzmanoff & FDLS Optioned; Rosales and Sizemore Recalled

June 6, 2011

In another surprising move amongst surprising moves this week the A’s today sent Kevin Kouzmanoff down to Triple-A Sacramento. Kouzmanoff has been struggling, but I frankly didn’t even think that he might have an option left but lo and behold he does and he will be plying his wares for the River Cats for the foreseeable future. Accompanying Kouz on the flight from BWI over to Colorado Springs will be right-handed reliever Fautino De Los Santos who pitched in two games in the Boston series filling in for Grant Balfour on paternity leave. To replace Kouzmanoff and De Los Santos, the A’s recalled two infielders from Sacramento, the recovering from injury Adam Rosales, and the newly acquired Scott Sizemore. Rosales will see action immediately as he gets the start today at third base.

A Joe Stiglich article from the Oakland Tribune had some interesting quotes, first from Kouzmanoff,

“I’m surprised, I didn’t see it coming. But we’ve got Rosales coming up. He’s healthy. That’s just the way it is.”

And perhaps even more surprising was this gem from manager Bob Geren who seldom says anything remotely negative or honest sounding,

“The production from that spot has not been there offensively and defensively. Now we’re going to give someone else a chance to produce in that spot.”

One other interesting quote from the article was Kouz saying something we’ve heard from Brian Fuentes and from Hideki Matsui, that Bob Geren’s haphazard managerial style may be affecting the players, saying,

“I feel like you play better walking into that clubhouse every day knowing that you’re going to be in the lineup.”

The plot thickens.

So the Scott Sizemore era begins in Oakland. Let’s see if this shakeup wakes up some bats. Daric Barton had a great series in Boston but this should serve as notice that no one is safe on this lineup which is an important message to hear.
