Jemile Weeks Oakland Bound?

June 6, 2011

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle tweeted,

Jemile Weeks did come out of Triple-A Sacramento’s game early. #Athletics”

This has fueled speculation that Weeks is coming to Oakland as he was not pulled from his game in Colorado Springs due to injury. Of course in tonight’s ballgame in Baltimore, Mark Ellis tweaked his hamstring and was replaced by Scott Sizemore so it is possible that Weeks could be called up. Weeks is not on the 40-man roster and someone would need to be removed from the 40-man to make room for him. This is a simple transaction as Dallas Braden could be moved to the 60-day disabled list (and likely will be at some point anyhow) however today’s news of an injury to Brett Anderson could complicate matters further down the road and virtually ensure that Bobby Cramer is the one called up to the A’s if they don’t wish to make another roster move (though a DFA of Kevin Kouzmanoff would seem less unlikely now that he is manning third base for the River Cats should the A’s want to free a spot for a second move to replace Anderson).

But we are getting well ahead of ourselves here as neither Weeks’ call up nor Anderson’s injury are yet official or even in existence. I had the fortune to see Weeks play in Nashville in mid May and I like what I saw. He is a real tiny and wiry guy, with great speed. Meanwhile Mychael Urban of CSNCalifornia is now confirming the move via Twitter, tweeting,

“Just confirmed Jemile Weeks is headed to #Athletics.”

If this is the case, I imagine it means Mark Ellis is going to the disabled list and if that is the case, I’d like to again blame Bob Geren as he has used Ellis relentlessly (58 of 61 games) despite his lengthy injury history. I have said since before the season began that Ellis should receive ample days off to ensure he stays healthy throughout the year – apparently Geren feels differently, but it’d seem I may have had something to my line of thinking.

Weeks is presently hitting .324/.419/.453 with a .394 wOBA, he has been very fortunate sporting a .377 BABIP but his 13.3% BB% and 17.3% K% are solid numbers. He also brings a bit of speed to the A’s with eight stolen bases (four times caught). It’ll be interesting to see what he can do, the only reason I think he is being called up is because Kevin Kouzmanoff can’t be recalled for another ten days, so I assume Weeks’ time in Oakland will be short with Sizemore getting most of the starts at second while Ellis is out.
