Braden to 15-Day DL, Harden to 60-Day DL

April 18, 2011

The addition of David Purcey this morning required several roster moves and we now know what they are. Not entirely surprising, Dallas Braden was placed on the 15-day disabled list with “shoulder stiffness”, while we still have no word yet on the true severity of the injury it is severe enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list which given the negativity of Braden was not surprising in the least. With Purcey being added to the 40-man roster someone had to come off of it and that person was Rich Harden who was placed on the 60-day disabled list freeing up a spot for the new lefty. I think that move is telling and I do not anticipate that Rich Harden will ever pitch for the A’s again, or possibly anyone else as his injuries just continue to mount and he appears no closer to recovery, so fragile is he – his initial injury occurred his first time throwing this spring.

It appears as if Tyson Ross will move into the rotation. The next roster decisions will come when Michael Wuertz is expected to be activated on Thursday (as per a Susan Slusser report in San Francisco Chronicle) and then following that when Andrew Bailey is activated though no timetable for his return has yet been set, he has been throwing. My guess still remains that Bobby Cramer will be the odd man out as the lefty-righty split in the bullpen is currently quite extreme with five lefties (Jerry Blevins, Craig Breslow, Cramer, Brian Fuentes and the newly added Purcey) and only two right-handers: (assuming Ross is in the rotation) Grant Balfour and Brad Ziegler. Makes absolutely no sense to carry five lefties in one bullpen, I feel four is even far too many. The perhaps tougher decision comes when Bailey is activated, tough to say who you want to rid of then, the A’s could try to see if they could get Purcey through waivers, but if they don’t they lose both him and Danny Farquhar for nothing basically, so I think he’d stay on board. Blevins looked like he would be the first to go earlier but his performance has been the strongest of anyone in the pen so it’d seem he’d be a sure thing to stay. Time will only tell. But by the end of this week, I’d expect Cramer to be sporting a River Cats jersey.

Yeah I’ve been listening via the TuneIn Radio app on my iPhone. Chris Townsend is getting a full three hour show from 1-4. Hopefully it is pretty A’s-centric.

Disappointed to hear about Harden. I was looking forward to him being in the bullpen after seeing the way McCarthy has pitched so far, but it looks like that will never happen
