Giants Sweep Bay Bridge Series to End Spring

March 30, 2011

Dallas Braden and Madison Bumgarner both pitched a great game today in San Francisco at AT&T Park as both clubs wrapped up their spring schedules. The A’s finish spring training with a 12-21-1 record as they fell to the Giants 2-1 today. The A’s led the game through the bottom of the ninth with two outs before they blew it. Braden went 5 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out five, walking two and allowing only five hits. Craig Breslow, Brad Ziegler then Jerry Blevins relieved him before Bobby Cramer came in to earn the save.

Cramer, vying for the final bullpen spot when the A’s announce their 25-man roster, got two outs before the game all unraveled. Mike Fontenot got a two out single, and then when trying pick him off Cramer threw the ball away allowing Fontenot to third. The next hitter, Eli Whiteside scored Fontenot on a single tying the game, and then on the throw to the plate Whiteside took second. A Chris Stewart single then scored Whiteside securing the victory for the Giants. Cramer’s outing makes one wonder if he will indeed earn that last spot on the roster, especially given that it’d potentially make him the fourth lefty in the bullpen.A

Rosterwise also of note was that Andy LaRoche played shortstop once Cliff Pennington exited the game making me wonder if he has possibly won the final backup infield spot. Behind the plate Kurt Suzuki was backed up by Landon Powell making me think he too has secured that position battle.

Offensively the A’s bats were again pretty quiet today, following his 3-for-4 night, Hideki Matsui had a 1-for-4 day, and Ryan Sweeney went 2-for-3 which means he fell just short of .400 for the spring, ending the exhibition schedule with a .395 batting average. Kevin Kouzmanoff meanwhile went 1-for-3 which caused his spring average to fall to .413. Everyone starts over again Friday with zeros as the season is set to begin.
