Live Blogging: A’s @ Reds ST Game 26

March 22, 2011

4:09PM PDT: We’re all done. Michael Wuertz finishes off the ninth, a little shaky (allowed two runs) but good enough to keep the lead, A’s win 10-8, despite this 1990 World Series vengeance not attained.

4:04PM PDT: “It’s gonna fall in front of [Chris]  Carter for a base hit”, you know that does in fact get old. Jeremy Hermida, the former Oakland Athletic gets the hit. I liked the pickup of Hermida last year and though it made sense to non-tender him, I wouldn’t have minded seeing the A’s pick him up again. He isn’t that far removed from putting up high-teens home run numbers. Not sure where Oakland would use him exactly but depth isn’t a bad thing and Cincy picked him up on a minor-league deal.

3:56PM PDT: Base hit for Andy LaRoche plates a run, he leads the club in Cactus League RBI with 12. I don’t care about RBI which are meaningless, what I do like to see though is that LaRoche has been great with runners on base. He keeps getting hits. I’d like to see him make the club, I am not really sold on Eric Sogard though I know Bob Geren keeps saying defense will win this battle, so you have to give Sogard the edge.

3:41PM PDT: Landon Powell strikes out (again) spring average is .207, guy standing on first as he struck out is Josh Donaldson, spring average is .300. Yet it looks like Powell will be brought west to Oakland while the bus stops off to let Donaldson out in Sacramento. It’s a shame because Powell just doesn’t cut it.

3:31PM PDT: Bit of a rough outing for Breslow, but first time out in the Cactus League is done. He just needs to get loose enough to perform come Opening Day.

3:17PM PDT: Craig Breslow is in making his spring debut. About time! Glad to have him back in there, I love this guy. Smartest man in baseball.

3:05PM PDT: Aroldis Chapman is perhaps the biggest marketing opportunity for the Reds. The Cuban Missile (what a great nickname). You’d think he’d attract some attention from non-Reds fans here in Spring Training and the Reds don’t even think to have a radar gun at Goodyear Ballpark. These fans might be watching a 105 mph fastball from a lefty and they wouldn’t even know it. Who dropped the ball on that decision?

2:13PM PDT: Eight hits for A’s hitters so far. Would be great to keep this up all year!

2:05PM PDT: Joey Votto blasts one. Ball sure is jumping here in Goodyear today.

2:03PM PDT: Reds get on the board trail 7-1 now. The Reds won the NL Central last year and until the recent injuries to Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum I figured they didn’t stand a chance to repeat. Now I may be wrong… it is an interesting division and as of today I think it is a very close 1) Cincinnati, 2) Milwaukee, 3) St. Louis.

1:49PM PDT: A’s 7-0. Mike Leake is really struggling and was great last season, could this be Dusty Baker’s overuse of young starting pitching coming back to haunt him? From what I’ve read and hear Dusty wasn’t as bad on his young staff as he has been in the past. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood were perhaps lessons well learned?

1:37PM PDT: Coco Crisp is off to such a great start this spring, another home run (third of the Cactus League). Aside from his personal situation Coco has had a great spring with no complaints, the key to Coco being a huge contributor as has always been an issue for him is staying healthy. Aside from 2007 (145 games) in the past five seasons Coco has at best managed to stay on the on the field for 118 contests (2008).  If he can put in 150 games he could be quite impressive as he ought to be good for about 10 home runs, and 25+ stolen bases, a nice combo for a leadoff guy.

1:27PM PDT: Bases are juiced and Kevin Kouzmanoff grounds into a double play. Hope to not see too much of that in the regular season. Despite my numerous complaints over Kouzmanoff, I feel good about his year this year, he’s been good thus far this spring and maybe he has turned a corner.

1:13PM PDT: Daric Barton home run! Great start.
