Arbitration Avoidation: Brad Ziegler

January 15, 2011

MLB Trade Rumors reported that Brad Ziegler avoided arbitration with Los Atleticos by agreeing to a one-year $1.25M contract. Ziegler was the first of six A’s who need to come to terms with the club. Ziegler was signed by Oakland out of the Northern League where he slung sidearm tosses for the Schaumberg Flyers. Since he made his MLB debut with the A’s he has given righties lots of trouble with his deceptive delivery, leaving them hitting at a low .230/.281/.284 slash line.

Ziegler’s avoiding arbitration was far from the biggest news story for the bullpen this week as the A’s continue to pursue additional arms in the bullpen specifically by the name of Brian Fuentes. There is speculation that the signing of Fuentes would allow the A’s to move a bullpen arm and package him into an upgrade at the hot corner but my thoughts are that Ziegler would not be the one to go. Since joining the A’s in 2008, he has made the most appearances of any pitcher in the Green and Gold (180 – with the next best being Craig Breslow‘s 135). During this time he’s also been the least likely of A’s hurlers to let up a home run (0.37HR/9) so given these factors, and the fact that Oakland would be adding a third southpaw in Fuentes, I expect Ziegler to have his paycheck signed by Mr. Wolff throughout the 2011 season.
